ENIGMA PANT

WHAT'S IT MADE FROM?

Our ENIGMA PANT is made from two fabrics:

The first is our acid velveteen, which is 100% cotton. This has been sourced from The Fabric Store in Newton, Auckland. The Fabric Store has sourced this fabric from Wall Fabric in Morningside. This is a deadstock fabric, meaning it is either end-of-line, excess from a large scale designer, a mill overrun or a cancelled order. This fabric in particular is an end of line from Diane Von Furstenburg.

By using deadstock, we are able to use up already existing fabrics where they would otherwise have ended up in landfill, support New Zealand businesses and for Pera the ability to find unique, exciting printed fabrics that can often be hard to source locally. The fabrics that we source from the Fabric Store are often limited rolls, 15m would be the maximum amount we are able to source with amounts as minimal as 5m, in this case it was only 11m! This is an exciting challenge for Pera during the design process because it limits what you can and can’t make with such little amounts, this fabric in particular was a big inspiration for this body of work. It influences the process from design through to production and purchase - the buyer needs to truly love the garment to endure the pre-order process and accept the higher price point for a unique limited piece. This is bringing the slow, artistic process back to the craft that PERA MAY is championing whilst hoping to educate consumers around the benefits of appreciating clothing and purchasing consciously.

The second is our frosted-mint fabric, which is 100% silk taffeta, sourced from Fabric Merchants in Kingsland, Auckland. Fabric Merchants have sourced this fabric from the Como Region in Italy and have sea freighted it to New Zealand (lower carbon emissions - yay!) This is a deadstock fabric, meaning it is either end-of-line, excess from a large scale designer, a mill overrun or a cancelled order. By using deadstock, we are able to use up already existing fabrics where they would otherwise have ended up in landfill, we are supporting New Zealand local businesses and we have an up-close and personal relationship with our suppliers and fabrications. These incredible silks are top of the line Italian silks which we don’t often have the opportunity to source here in New Zealand. Thanks to Richard, Jess and the team at Fabric Merchants for bringing these incredible fabrics to the table and for putting up with our indecisive design process!!!

WHO MADE IT?

Because we are made to order and runs are so small we use multiple machinists across the same styles to ensure we get our orders within the time frames we (you) need. Therefore your piece may have been made by either;
